Vacations outside countries let you experience culture shock once in a while. It’s not just about their foreign language and the different intonations they use. Sometimes, their foreign habits and practices intimidate us and make us feel like we don’t belong. Truly, it takes a huge time to adjust and cope with the new people we meet but it’s even harder if we decide on staying there to work without the presence of our families. This must be how the first time Foreign Domestic Workers feels. As much as we want to them to be our effective workers, we also need to understand how the FDW face culture shock as she steps in a foreign home.
Here are the ways how ORIENTATION helps you and your maid to avoid uneasiness in your home:
1. Employer’s Orientation Seminar
The Ministry of Manpower requires the first time employers to have an Orientation Seminar. In this Orientation, employers are introduced to the possibilities that may happen once a foreign domestic worker began to stay in their houses. Not only the first time employers need this, even the ones who have hired before must at least try this orientation. It is unavoidable that employers may encounter unsuccessful employment. It means that they might have failed to keep their maids for a long time because of misunderstanding and a lot of reasons.
In-House Re-Orientation of Domestic Helpers on Transfer
Not only are the employers in need of orientation. The first-time FDWs OR MAIDS need this re-orientation in the house they’re going to work in too. Most of them actually had their training in their agency but employers must also conduct a re-orientation in their house too. This is to educate them of your personal rules in your house and the practices you do not allow at home. This is usually done as soon as the employee is in.
On-the-Job Orientation by Employer
This Orientation is process and is done continually as the maid works. This is more than just an assessment but also the correction of the tasks she might be doing in a wrong way. There are reasons why sometimes a task Madam can do for a short time, takes a long time for her. We can observe her while she’s working and add side comments or tips for her to have a better outcome.
