The Things to do when Preparing our Food

Sometimes, it’s easy for us to wonder which foods are healthiest? Which food are safe to eat? Or is it clean? We all know that healthy foods are good for our health. Many people get sick from foods that aren’t cooked, stored and handled correctly, that causes food poisoning and other serious health problems, even leads to death.
To avoid getting ill from the food you eat at home, or when cooking for family and friends, it is important to follow the safe steps in food handling, cooking, and storage that are essential in preventing foodborne illness.

 

1. Keep Clean
Washing your hands properly and also the kitchen utensils, are one of the most important things you can do to help prevent and control the spread of many illnesses.
• Always wash your hands with soap and warm water for 20 seconds before and after preparing foods.
• Always wash your hands with water and soap after leaving a toilet.
• Wash and clean food counters or surfaces and cooking tools to provide food clean.
• Rinse well fresh fruits and vegetables under running water.

 

2. Separate Raw Foods from Pre-cooked Foods
• Keep raw and cooked food separately to avoid cross-contamination.
• Use different kitchen utensils like plates, knives and chopping boards for raw food and cooked foods.
• After cutting raw meats, wash cutting board, knife and counter tops with hot, soapy water.
• Cover and store raw food such as meat, poultry and seafood products in a sealed container to prevent them in contact with cooked food or ready to eat foods.
• Do not wash raw meat, poultry or eggs as it could actually spread germs because juices may splash onto your sink or counters.

3. Cook Properly
Cooking food properly will help make sure that any harmful bacteria are killed. Cooking food perfectly can kill all harmful bacteria that get in our food.
• Cook your food properly to at least 75 °C or hotter especially in meat, poultry and seafoods.
• Use a thermometer to check temperatures.
• Cool and store cooked foods as soon as possible.

 

4. Storing food
When storing food, it is important to keep food safe so that’s it still safe to eat or cook.
• Always refrigerate perishable food such as raw meat, poultry, seafoods and eggs, dairy, cut fruit, some vegetables and cooked leftovers within 2 hours.
• To maintain quality when freezing meat and poultry in its original package, wrap the package again with foil or plastic wrap that is recommended for the freezer.
• Don’t put hot food inside the refrigerator.
• Perishable food such as meat and poultry should be wrapped securely to maintain quality and to prevent meat juices from getting onto other food.
• Be alert of spoiled foods.
