Tips When Eating Out with the Toddler
Tips When Eating Out with the Toddler
Going out with the family on Sunday after church, then later going to a restaurant to eat is such a refreshing part of the weekend especially when we’ve worked hard at work. Thankfully, the live-in maid can tag along to look after the children while we’re out. Sometimes, however, it’s not so easy to have a peaceful meal when brings a 3-year-old child with us. The embarrassment we get when our child suddenly throws tantrums in the middle of a meal in a public restaurant is just too much. The child would cry out loud, causing the other costumers to turn their heads towards our table, and we can’t do anything but shrink in our seats.
Unlike adults, toddlers don’t have a concept of ‘losing face’ and table manners, so they needed someone who will teach them the etiquette when eating out with the family with the help of the Indonesian maid / Filipino maid. As parents, we can also avoid disasters by following these tips.
Plan early before eating out.
We can’t just storm in a restaurant any time of the day and expect a peaceful family meal with an easily-distracted toddler. The most ideal time to eat out with a toddler is just before the peak hours of lunch and dinner, around 10 am for lunch and around 5 pm for dinner. Parents should also look up child-friendly restaurants with high chairs for babies and a menu your little boy will love. Deciding to bring the toddler to a fancy restaurant where there’s breakable china or a hot barbeque grill on the table would be quite dangerous. Just before leaving, make sure to instruct the Indonesian maid / Filipino maid to keep an eye on the toddler throughout the whole meal to avoid accidents. Lastly, make sure the child has taken enough sleep and wasn’t tired before going unless we want to bring a grumpy child with a high probability of tantrums.
Order the child’s food as soon as we arrive in the restaurant.
Your little boy is less patient than the other members of the family. He will feel the urge to get off his seat and run around the restaurant when he’s too bored to wait. The Filipino maid/ Indonesian maid must see to it that his food arrives first for him to be occupied and be busy in his food. Live-in maids and parents should also remember that toddlers are slow eaters so they will need more time to finish their meal. Order the child’s food as soon as the family arrives in the restaurant to avoid baby tantrums!
Bring your baby’s tumbler or lidded cups.
Even if most restos offer their own beverages in a nice cup, the Indonesian maid or Filipino maid can still use some extra precautions and bring the child’s favorite tumbler from home. Kids love to play with almost everything including the glass of juice which may spill at any moment. This is why the live-in maid should try to transfer his fruit juice to a tumbler to refrain from knocking it over.
In case of emergency, bring the baby out of the restaurant.
Wherever the family decides to eat, the live-in maid should always keep in mind that other diners deserve to finish their meals undisturbed. In case the toddler screams and throws his spaghetti across the room, the Indonesian maid / Filipino maid may pick the child up from his seat, apologize to others for the inconvenience, and try to calm the child down. Remember, a public place is never the right place to reprimand a misbehaving child even if it’s too hard not to get mad.
Live-in maid should practice table manners with the child at home.
The child’s bad table manners at home would definitely show when the family eats out. While at home with the Indonesian maid / Filipino maid, your little girl must learn how to eat in place, use some basic utensils correctly, and not to talk while chewing food. The live-in maid can make the practice fun by role-playing where the nanny would act as a “server” and the child as a “costumer”, using some of her kitchen toys as props. It would be a great opportunity to spend time with the child and get to know him too!
