There’s always a language barrier between Filipino and Singaporeans. FDWs are not used to listen to Singlish and more than American English. Employers, in the other hand, have also difficulty understanding her maid’s English. The Indonesians should be excused in not understanding Singlish since they have their own English variety closer to Malay.
It takes a long time for her to do a task. Some chores could be unfamiliar to her but simple for Singaporean employers. The maid probably doesn’t do the certain chores frequently at her previous employer. Another reason is that she may have come from a place where things aren’t done quickly. Doing a task could be a culture bound thing.
She often exposes herself to danger in her ways of doing things. For example, touching a switch or plugging with wet hands and still continues to do so even after her employer reprimanded her and instructed her not to.
Filipino maids doesn’t usually have a problem with communication. One should probably prefer a Filipino maid over Myanmese or Indonesians. But then Filipinos expect a higher salary and more time off than the other races of maids.
