How ‘Novice’ is Novice Cooking for a new FDW?
A new Indonesian maid or Filipino maid is not an ideal cook in her first day. Upon the first instructions, she may not also understand the complexity of your recipe. Patiently teach your new maid the rules of your kitchen and more importantly, the basics of Chinese or your favourite Western dishes. Supervise her on her first few weeks. Some employers don’t have enough time for personal cooking lessons with the FDWs. They choose to enroll their helpers to cooking schools for a short or long period of time, depending on how much expertise do they want their maids to have.
Cooking schools is a huge help but don’t expect them to transform FDW to be the best chef. Even just memorizing the Chinese terms for some basic ingredients are already too hard for them. Even some FDWs also find it hard to familiarize the English names of some ingredients. This is because spices and ingredients have various names in every language. For example, ‘chilli’ is ‘chabe’ for Indonesian newcomer.
You can take her with you in some of your grocery shopping time or let her do the grocery herself. You can teach her the local terms for the basic ingredients. Let her familiarize the names everytime she cooks or shops. This will take even less time if you two can understand each other and speak one language.
Take it slow and easy. Novice cooking, even though it’s ‘novice’, is still hard for a foreigner who knows none of the basics.
