Filipino Maid–Indonesian Maid: What You have to Know about Storing Food
Everyone stores food in the kitchen. Whether it’s in the fridge, in the cabinet, or in cans and jars. Wise housekeepers find it more convenient and practical to store food instead of buying goods all the time. However, there are important things you have to know before keeping different kinds of food.
1. Frozen food
Food must be kept in the fridge that is cold enough with a temperature of 0° to 5° C. If you’re not sure how the temperature setting works on your fridge, you could use a fridge thermometer to check if it’s the right temperature. Check the label of the food and follow storage instructions. Sandwiches and cold dishes, for example, must not be exposed too long in a warm weather.
Generally, food should not be left in the open for four hours maximum and leftovers must be cooled ideally within one to two hours. Eat any leftovers within two days, except for cooked rice, which you should eat within one day to help avoid food poisoning.
2. Storing meat
To stop bacteria from spreading and to avoid food poisoning, it is a must to store meat in the freezer. Store raw meat and poultry in clean, sealed containers on the bottom shelf of the fridge. This is to keep them from touching or dripping onto other food.
Also mark the meat’s expiration date and follow any storage instructions. Always separate cooked meat from raw meat.
You can keep food in the fridge for a long time but it will affect the texture and taste of the food. You could defrost food in a microwave if you are planning to cook it.
3. Storing dry food
Some types of food don’t need to be stored in the fridge. Example of such are pasta, flour, salt, tinned goods and unopened jars. To keep them fresh, try putting them in sealed bags and containers. This will prevent food from spilling out. However, don’t use old containers that were once used for chemicals. Instead, clean water bottles can be used as containers. Never store food on the floor or dirty areas for that may encourage ants and insects. Lastly, remember putting the goods in a dry clean area.
The manner of storing always depend on the type of food you want to keep. Some food might need to be kept in the fridge once you’ve opened them, some just need to be in a dry cool place. It is important to look at the label and check storing instructions.
