Should We Implement Day-offs for Nannies/Maids? Why and Why Not?
All workers have rights just as you have your own rights as an employer. The decision of Ministry of Manpower to grant domestic worker with day off stirred a lot of discussions from the concerned citizens of Singapore. Are day-offs really necessary for a maid? What are the risks in allowing stay-in workers to have a day off from work? Will the employer benefit from this?
We came up with lists of reasons why we should consider day-offs for maids and the risks that follows our decision:
Why you should allow day-offs.
1.) You have to take care of what you have once in a while.
Hiring a maid sometimes means hands-off to our household chores. Of course, it reduces the time we usually spend on our children, also. You may not be seeing your kid as frequent as before when haven’t hired an employee to do the baby-sitting. A day-off could mean a day to come back to your family and do the things a dedicated mother does. Maybe the busy work in the office has caused you to lose track of your children’s performance in school, the health of your treasured pet, etc. What if your maid’s day off is the solution for a family feud to disappear? You may have unlearned the things about your home while you’re away. Learn everything again for just a day!
2.) She might be tired and she doesn’t tell you.
Everyone, no matter what job she/he is in, gets tired. Your maid may have been inefficient these past few days. Could it be because of too much work without rest? She is living in a foreign country, away from her family and it could be that homesickness has caused her not to work well. As an employer, you should give her a day-off to clear her mind and have some rest. This may mean a day of ‘recharging’ her. She might not be complaining because she’s too shy or you may appear to be intimidating for her. One of the ways of benefiting from your hired maid is making her happy with her work and the rules you have set in the workplace. Always remember: A happy maid is an efficient maid.
With the two things above follows some risks. Some employers worry that maids might abuse this day-off and do something that will bring the employer trouble. Some worry that the maid may become too sociable with the people ‘outside’ that she’ll bring boyfriends or strangers in the house. It is important to set rules and talk with the maid before the day-off. With the thought that her ‘personal life remains personal’ in mind, tell her the boundaries and things she must avoid. If she continues to violate your rules, it’s time to take necessary action and settle it.
