5 Basic Nutrition Tips for a Healthier Elderly
Food is a basic need that requires thorough planning as we age. For the elderly, eating difficulties may be experienced when the sign of aging starts: a loss of appetite and unhealthy weight loss, problems chewing or swallowing, depression, or a need to reduce fat and sugar with certain chronic conditions
To make sure your grandparents or elderly are eating right, make sure you follow these advice for better elderly nutrition.
1. Go for nutritious meals
Vegetables and fruits are still the most advisable food even for the old ones. Steam the vegetables to make it softer and more chewable for them to eat. You can also chop the fruits to small pieces to make it easier to swallow.
2. Give them enough fluids
All bodily processes needs fluid to keep going. Our bodies can also be naturally hydrated when we eat more fruit and vegetables. Make sure your loved ones are having enough fluids as they grow old.
3. Early meals for them
Don’t give them much for dinner. Digestive problems can occur in senior citizens during night time and may interfere in their good night’s sleep. Let them eat more during lunch or in an early time of the day.
4. Never let them skip meals
If they aren’t hungry, encourage them to eat a little instead of not eating meals at all. Skipping meals will make them eat a lot on the next meal and this can cause dropping blood sugars and dizziness.
5. Small meals for them
Let them eat a little – 5 to 6 times per day. This will reduce the highs and lows of insulin levels, will let them eat properly without difficulty in breathing and chest congestion, and will give them more calorie intake to have a better appetite.
We will all grow old and experience the challenges our grandparents are facing. We must understand them and give them adequate time and attention. These will all be more effective when we take care of them with love and affection.
