We have these common problems when it comes to our maid and her management of the house. If we are having problems when it comes to her work and effectiveness, we can actually fix that without being mean to our maids. Here are the common problems and how can we fix it.
She can’t get along well on our family members and has difficulty settling into the house.
Most of the time, the reasons behind these are maybe because she still has trouble assimilating into a new culture. This is one of the hardest problems an overseas worker encounters. We must also make sure first that all the basic needs are met. Maybe, she’s not eating well because she’s not used to the new kind of food. We can also ask her if she’s comfortable with her room and space or if she sleeping well before doing the day’s work. This can just be also an effect of homesickness. We can assure good things like she’s a part of the family, we care for her and that we welcome her. This may ease her coping and help her work effectively. We can also talk to the family member who is not getting along with the maid. Emphasize the importance of harmony and friendship in the household.
It takes time for her to work on her chores and she’s not effective.
We can observe her on her daily chores and suggest how she can finish things faster. We can also ask ourselves if we’re giving her too much or something that is out of her capacity. This depends a lot on our expectations; maybe we set them too high. We should also not compare our present maids with our recent one. Each maid has her own characteristics and field of expertise. Comparing will only breed resentment and cause her to feel inadequate. She might be doing her best and we just don’t see it. Again, we must also consider that she might be doing the chores in the wrong way and so we must correct her and teach her.
She fails to follow some of the instructions and she doesn’t finish the job you told her to do.
The first thing we can ask ourselves is, “Are my instructions concrete, complete and clear?” For example, telling her to “clean the kitchen” is very broad. Which parts do you want to be cleaned? If the instruction is too broad, we can specify the tasks to avoid confusion. Make sure also that she’s taking notes of the tasks she’s about to do. Break down the bigger task into smaller ones. This is the only way we can make sure that she’ll complete the job. We may be also forgetting the language barrier that still exists between our maids and us. Before having the conclusions that she already understood, let her repeat her tasks to make sure the communication was successful.
