Maids’ Challenges with their Employers

Maids’ Challenges with their Employers

Maids’ Challenges with their Employers

Foreign Domestic Workers make an important input to the economy. Society considered them essential. They have played an important role in the lives of many families. Domestic workers leave their loved ones and homelands to take care of other people. Because these women put their lives on hold, both their employer’s family and their own can move on.

Singapore  is common place for middle-class families to hire a domestic worker from maid agency to help run the household chores. However, being in a new place where everything is different; language, food, culture and people; adjustment may be difficult to manage. Singapore is a busy and fast-paced country. Everybody moves and work fast. Time is precious and valuable to them. Yet, maids, growing up in their home country were not brought up the way they were.

It’s undeniable that maids experience obstacles at work. Singaporeans speak fast and abrupt, maids may have problems conversing with them. They are straightforward individuals. If something has been done wrong, they rather confront the issue than ignores  it. Most maids are not comfortable with honest confrontations.  They might feel scared and embarrassed which more often than not they opt to justify rather than admitting the mistakes done. Often, they will also choose to run away from the problem by asking for a transfer or to quit.

Maids Challenges

Food is a sensitive subject to bring up. The fridge may be well-stocked, but not accessible to the maid. Employers should provide “sufficient food”. But it is debatable how much is “sufficient “. How can they perform well if they are hungry? Employers have to be more sensitive to the needs of the maid first and give them time to adjust, instead of saying, “This is Singapore, get used to it “. Maids need to be physically fed for them to run the household chores  and function well.  Employers are responsible of their maid’s well – being.

Some employers willfully withhold the payment of their workers’ salaries which is against under Employment Act . Few experienced long hours of work and has given no off days. Invasion of privacy, restriction on communication with family in home country are one of the maids struggles. There were cases of physical abuse; most commonly by someone throwing objects, verbal abuse like ” you are stupid”, “you’re not a good helper” or “you got no brain”. Maids deserve to have adequate rest or sleep.  Making them sleep in the corridor or living room is an improper accommodation. Over time, such treatment has an apparent effect to the maids total well – being.

Foreign domestic workers or traditionally known as “Maids” are a big help if they are managed and treated justifiably. They are an integral part of Singaporean economy. Maids are given heavy responsibilities – the caregiving of the elderly and rearing of children. If they’re given this responsibility they must be treated with respect and protection.” But in spite of all these hurdles, FDW’s still consider Singapore as a prime alternative for work to alleviate their status in life.

Managing Domestic Helpers

Managing Domestic Helpers

Managing Domestic Helpers

Foreign Domestic Workers or the so called maids have become almost indispensable. They are some of the most wanted individuals in the world today. A number of folks doing professional jobs don’t have enough time to carry on and manage their household so maids are the ones to take position in doing that work. Maids have become a necessity to every household. From keeping the house clean to looking after the children or elderly. However, there are things to consider on having an outsider in the family. During the entire employment, she will reside in your home. The first few months will be a crucial adjustment and transition period.

Many domestic workers are not used to staying in a city as they usually come from provinces. They may also have complexity in understanding and conversing in the language. Therefore they would need some time to be familiar with the house daily routine. Common difficulties include using appliances like vacuum cleaner, microwave ovens, washing machines and even living in a super structured building. Setting up a reasonable performance expectation and communicating household rules will clearly benefit both parties. Be as specific as possible so that your maid can follow easily.  In the first few months, it would be a good idea to spend time to orient and train your maid.

Open communication is important having an outsider in the family. To help alleviate her homesickness and sense of isolation, let her communicate with her family back home. Most maids come from a different lifestyle, cultural and even religious background. She could be lonely and nostalgic. These issues could be the reason her work performance drops. As the employer, it would be best if you are sensitive enough with your helper’s emotional dilemma. . Integrate and accept your helper as a part of the family will help to remove her fears and anxieties.  Make an effort to understand her different culture, lifestyle and background. Exercising persistence, tolerance and patience will lessen any clash and problem that could affect her work.

A happy and well-managed helper will give you less problem than one who is unhappy. As an employer, you are also in charge for your maid’s general well-being including food, accommodation, basic necessities and medical care. Recently, giving insufficient food has been an issue. It would be better if they are given food on their preference and slowly let them adjust to the foreign food. Where possible your worker should be given a separate room. Ensure that sufficient private space for sleep is provided. Paying their salary on time and giving credits can boost the maids‘ momentum to do an extra mile for you. Being sensible to the total being of your helper is a good start to a healthy relationship.

Maids could be skillful as keepers of the household but normally, they were not able to complete college or have not been to college at all. Nevertheless, they should not be discriminated or misjudged because they can be wiser when it comes to keeping the home.  Helpers may forget and commit mistakes and being straightforward individuals you rather correct it directly than ignore the issue. Generally, maids are non – confrontational most often than not, they will choose to deny or give excuses to certain issues. Knowing how to deal them in an acceptable manner would avoid the rise of misunderstanding and denials.

Excellent helpers aren’t born – they are trained. Imparting purpose and values of life can help them grow as a person. Many of them come from a diverse background. They may bring with them wrong values and belief system. We will never know a person unless you start living with them. Counseling and open communication can help them make better choices and thus becoming a good helper of your family. It will make them want to stay longer working with you. Do remember Eden Grace maids are hiring a helper who is very much human being and therefore you must be prepared to manage and train them.

Signs of a Stressed-Out Maid You Mustn’t Ignore

Signs of a Stressed-Out Maid You Mustn’t Ignore

*Signs of a Stressed-Out Maid You Mustn’t Ignore*

Having a hardworking and responsible Filipino maid | Indonesian maid | Myanmar maid is more than an employer can ask for. They are a blessing and they make lives easier, especially to busy parents.
But maids are humans too. And we often forget that they are. We forget to consider and ask about their feelings, whether they are happy, sad, feeling sick, and stressed. When we are stressed, we have outlets – our colleagues, our partners, and our friends. But when the maid gets stressed they don’t have a direct outlet to burst out their problems, and they would not tell it to you directly.
A stressed-out maid is not good for you, your family, and for her as well. Watch out for these signs, if you think your maid is stressed-out but doesn’t tell you.

1. *She’s slacking in her work* – One of the ways your maid may express her stress is by slacking on her daily activities. She may become antsy and forgetful because of her stress and anxiety. If you notice that your maid is not performing her duties well like she used to, sit her down and talk to her. This way you can extend the help that she needs.

2. *You catch her snapping at your kids* – We often hear horror stories of babies and toddlers being at the receiving end of a helper’s frustrations. If you suspect that your maid might be ill-treating your child, look for any of these signs: the child is anxious when left alone with the maid, has bumps, and bruises. You can install a CCTV camera to record what is happening at home while at work. And if caught red-handed, don’t hesitate to show her the door as soon as possible.

3. *She starts seeing ghosts and spirits* – Some maids makeup ghost stories just to have an excuse to leave their employers house. One example can be talking about a ghost leaving tooth marks in some soaps and potatoes, but turns out to be a mouse in the morning. If this happens with your maid. It simply means, that she is anxious about something, or really wants to leave.

4. *She constantly complains about her health* – Living as a maid in Singapore can be tiring, doing household and securing the welfare of their employer can make them lethargic at times. Because of this, the maid’s health could be in toll one way or another. They could also have an existing health problem before coming to work with the employer, and they just try to keep it to themselves. As their employer, it is our responsibility to show concern over maid’s health. Give them help that they need and if after all the help from doctors and countless check-ups, if the maid is still complaining about her health, then it could be another way of saying that she has other issues, or she wants to leave.

5. *She starts showing you attitude* – A good employer-employee relationship should be based on civility and mutual respect. The same goes with you and your maid. But if you notice a change of behaviour with your maid, like ignoring your requests, becoming rude, short-tempered, and showing you heaps of attitude, then this might be a voluntary/involuntary result of stress and anxiety.

When you notice one or more of these signs with your maid, go and have a sit down talk with them, ask them what is wrong, and the things you can do to make them feel better. This could help sort out the issue and get back to the usual routine, or move on with other alternatives if the issue is still unsolvable to you both.

Another thing to remember before hiring a Filipino maid | Indonesian maid | Myanmar maid for the first-time is to remind them to not be hesitant in telling you what they feel, whether they are stressed, having any health issues and any difficulties in doing their job. As an employer, reassure the maid that you are willing to help when certain need arises.
